Christian Prof wants to disrupt atheist organizations

Christians are sore losers. Every time they lose a court decision (say, like Roe v Wade), they continue to try to fight it with every ounce of their being. It would be admirable if it wasn’t inspired by the insipid fantasy of religion. A recent ruling from the Supreme Court has them all fired up again. It ruled Christian campus groups could not continue to benefit from equal access to school facilities if they practiced discrimination against gays. Although they said any healthy society must tolerate the existence of such groups (since it’s their legal right to exist), the government should not be in the business of helping these organizations in any way.

As you would expect, fundies aren’t too happy about this ruling, and one UNC Wilminton teacher by the name of Mike Adams has vowed to seek revenge on – wait for it – atheist organizations.

…when I get back to the secular university in August, I plan to round up the students I know who are most hostile to atheism. Then I’m going to get them to help me find atheist-haters willing to join atheist student groups across the South. I plan to use my young fundamentalist Christian warriors to undermine the mission of every group that disagrees with me on the existence of God.

That means an invading group can turn a smaller, weaker group into second class citizens on campus. That’s what I intend to do to those groups who do not believe in God.

I do not seek robust debate. I seek power over the godless heathen dissident.

Well, at the very least he’s honest about his intentions. It’s surprisingly refreshing when religionists stop pussyfooting around and correctly point out that they seek to have power and dominion over others who don’t see the world the way they do. So at the very least, I’d like to officially thank Mikey for his honesty.

Before you panic at the thought of your group being taken over by religious fundamentalists, Daylight Atheism points out that if Adams and his religious posse really want to join these secular groups, they’ll need to pay the fees and abide by the charters of these specific groups. If things got really bad, these atheist groups could openly discriminate against non-believers and suffer the same timid penalties that their religious, discriminatory counterparts do.

I actually have a pretty simple solution that would ensure that these religious wackos would think twice about joining: just make it so anyone who joins has to take a specific pledge that they deny the Holy Spirit. It might not mean much to us non-believers, but the Bible is pretty clear anyone who specifically denies the Holy Spirit is condemned to Hell (no take-backs). That should be enough to keep these fundies at bay, honestly. Remember these morons know very little about us, but we know how they operate, and more importantly, how they think (since so many of us used to be religious at one time). Advantage atheists!

The Taliban is scary

Why do I hate religion? Because it’s the easiest thing in the world to convince poor, uneducated young men that killing yourself for your imaginary friend is a great idea! What other kind of fervent, uncritical ideology allows such obedient faith zombies to flourish?

Judge allows Hutaree terrorists to be under house arrest

Remember the wannabe Christian terrorist group that was arrested in March for plotting to murder a police officer (and subsequently bomb the funeral)? The members of the militia have been released while they await for their trial, on the order of District Judge Victoria Roberts who claims federal prosecutors failed to properly make a case for their incarceration.

The Government relies on the seriousness of the charges as well, to argue that Defendants must be held without bond, because they present a danger to the community. While the Government argues that the Defendants are also a flight risk, its reasons are not persuasive. Importantly, the Court’s Pretrial Services Agency concludes that the Defendants do not present such a risk.

All 9 have been ordered to stay home with an electronic tracking device on their ankle, but a part of me wonders if a bunch of antigovernmental wackos are really going to honor the court’s decision and stay put. This is especially true for anyone facing a possible life sentence. Luckily these guys don’t seem like the brightest bulbs in the bunch, so if they do try take a run for it, I don’t think it’ll be too hard to track them down.

What’s interesting about this case is these wackos didn’t end up actually doing anything, so it’s possible they might argue their First Amendment rights were violated. It’s hard to say how this one will go: they were hoping to kill a lot of cops, and that’s not something which will win you a lot of points with a jury of your peers.

Nate Phelps on the Grayness of Life

The sexy and talented Carisa Hendrix was able to film Nate Phelps (of the Westboro Phelps family) when he came to visit the Center for Inquiry, Calgary a few months ago. She did a great job, and if you love the fact she did this out of the kindness of her own heart, be sure to give her a big “thank-you” shout. I demand it!

South Park creators threatened over depiction of Mohammed

There are few certainties in life, but you can always count on: 1) death is inevitable, 2) you will always have to pay taxes, and 3) Muslims will always flip the fuck out if you depict their prophet, no matter how innocent it is. Case in point: Matt Stone and Trey Parker are again the subject of controversy for their 200th episode, which featured Mohammed in a Bear suit to hide his identity. As you might have guessed, Muslim groups are up in arms over the depiction, and have issued (as is customary) threats of violence against the animators.

We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show. This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them.

Actually, that sounds like a pretty serious threat, especially when the site entices people to actually show up at their house to “voice” their displeasure (or featuring audio clips of a mullah advocating the killing of blasphemers). How about you chill the fuck out instead, assholes? So sorry you can’t stand the idea of people making fun of your religion, but unfortunately for you, no one has the right to not be offended. If you don’t like it, might I suggest moving back to a country where blasphemy is punished as barbarically as it was 300 years ago (perhaps Saudi Arabia is more to your liking)?

Religion of peace my ass.

Home Grown Terrorist arrested in Michigan

Normally, if you hear about a plot by an armed civilian militia trying to kill government officials, you figure it’s happening in some unstable developing country. It’s hard to believe in this day and age, the most powerful and wealthy country in the world also seems to have similar problems with armed maniacs trying to overthrow the present authority.

A few days ago, police and FBI agents arrested 9 home grown “terrorists” who were planning on killing a cop in order to later murder a bunch of police officers at his/her funeral. The small militia is composed entirely of Christian fundamentalists, and claim the name of the group, the”Hutaree” means “Christian warrior” (although by all accounts the word is simply made-up).

These religious nutjobs are very anti-government, and are convinced the former Secretary General of NATO, Javier Solana, is actually the Antichrist. Their plan is simple: to defend Christianity by waging war on those who oppose the divine authority of Jesus Christ (in other words, anyone who has half a brain). Their “About Us” page says it all* (including the fact it’s illegible at times):

“We believe that one day, as prophecy says, there will be an Anti-Christ. All Christians must know this and prepare, just as Christ commanded…The Hutaree will one day see its enemy and meet him on the battlefield if so [sic] God wills it.”

This has to be the part of their scheme that confuses me the most. The Bible “predicts” the Antichrist will come, but this is all supposed to lead up to the event Christians call the Rapture, where true believers get whisked up to God’s magical-sky-playland. Only non-believers will be “left behind” to face-off against Jesus in the final conflict. So what exactly do these fundamentalists think their job is? Do they think they are responsible for bringing down the Anti-Christ and failing to let prophesy be fulfilled?

Of course you could argue religious nutbags simply find in their respective texts whatever they want to find; in this case, these paranoid weirdos needed some kind of moral justification for the twisted evil they were about to commit. This is what makes religions conviction so frightening; anyone wanting to find reason to harm, torture or kill their neighbor can find plenty of religious passages encouraging violence in their respective holy texts; there’s no limit to the kind of twisted logic you’ll be capable of if you put enough time and effort into looking for it. If you think there’s a difference between these assholes and the fuckfaces who blew up the World Trade Center, you’re underestimating just how crazy fundamentalists really are.

*(Update: The site now sells outdoor apparel and cowboy hats)

Repent Amarillo, before you get blown to holy bits!

If you’ve got a giant hard-on for Jesus and the military, you need to check out “Repent Amarillo”, a fundamentalist Christian organization that tries to look like an Army recruitment video, specifically because this image is attractive to them. As far as they are concerned, there’s a spiritual war going on, and they intend to fight it with full army gear. It’s a site that’s not welcoming to everyone. If you’re a pussy moderate Christian, you should know better than to question the word of the Lord!

While some of them support our efforts, and some may not, it is not about us and it is not about them. It is about Jesus Christ.

Not satisfied by just staying home and clutching their Bibles, these guys are taking on extra-curricular activities to help spread the word of the Lord your God (for is ruling over your life with an iron first not the most loving expression a deity can have over his monkey slaves?). Here’s a list of events they have dedicated themselves to crashing for the good of your eternal life:

1. Gay pride events. (Jesus hates gays, even more than he hates Fig trees)
2. Earth worship events such as “Earth Day” (apparently Jesus hates hippies)
3. Pro-abortion events or places such as Planned Parenthood
4. Breast cancer events such as “Race for the Cure” to illuminate the link between abortion and breast cancer. (Their “scientists” must also be wearing a lot of camo in the lab looking for that spurious link)
5. Opening day of public schools to reach out to students.
6. Spring break events.
7. Demonically based concerts. (I don’t know about your music, but how much of it is “demonically based”)
8. Halloween events. (Are they joyless?)
9. Other events that may arise the ministry feels called to confront. (Nothing spells comfort like crazy fundies in full army gear and guns, don’t you agree?)

They want to try and save our souls so we don’t go to hell, but is this accomplished at the end of a bayonet? I guess in their twisted world view, if they can’t save you from Hell, they’ll try their best to send you there pronto.

God, take over the media!

Take from the unrighteous, and give the media over to the crazy Christian fundies. Oh Lord! don’t you know with your super magic you can simply change things and make it easier for the blatantly ignorant to spread the message we all better love you before you throw us into hellfire. Three cheers for the prince of peace!

Steve Doocy thinks “Muslims started it”

So let me get this straight, Doocy; you’re no longer claiming the rifles are merely a private company putting innocent Bible codes on rifle scopes, but rather arguing “Muslims started it”? Yet another reason why religious pandering nutbags at FOX News need to stop yapping on about issues they have no clear understanding of. Do they think this argument will dissuade fundamentalist sympathizers who are arguing this is a religious war? Shut your fucking mouth already, idiot!

Cartoonist attacked by Muslim fundamentalist

You can’t start the New Year without a religious nutjob trying to murder someone they perceive as a threat to their way of life. Remember back in 2005 when the Muslim world was freaking out about a bunch of stupid cartoons depicting Muhammad as a terrorist? Turns out Kurt Westergaard, arguably the most high profile cartoonist involved, was attacked in his home yesterday by a radical Somali Muslim.

Kurt is thankfully alive, since he managed to flee inside his panic room and set off the alarm (guess he planned ahead). His axe wielding assailant (interesting choice of weapons I suppose) tried to then escape, attacking a police squad that later shot him in the shoulder and knee to bring him down.

I imagine Islamic apologists will say Kurt brought this kind of thing on himself by “insulting” their precious religion. Moderates may try and condemn the attack, but they still claim the cartoons are sacrilegious. It’s like an open invitation the more radical segment of their own faith to take drastic and murderous action against “offenders”; think of it as a bullshit “bad cop, good cop” routine where one guy beats the shit out of you while his partner begs you to confess for your own safety.

Westergaard was taken to a secret location while things cool off, but his defiance in light of threats on his life leads me to believe it’s only a matter of time before he gets iced by some radical Islamic madman for the crime of blasphemy. Isn’t religion grand?

This guy is scary, but luckily he just died

Say what you will about Oral Roberts; at least he wasn’t boring. This guy was a pioneering televangelist, who basically invented the idea of scamming people out of their hard earned money on TV. In 1977 he claims he had a vision of a 900 foot tall Jesus urging him to construct a hospital, which he did. He also started a crazy Christian school, and despite the most famous of his graduates being a fictional character (Ned Flanders), it’s still in operation despite having gone massively into debt (having found a generous and obviously pious contributor). He died today, which I regard as stellar news.

In this video you can hear his painful/hilarious opinions about intercourse, including how “wild and crazy” gay sex is. Does anyone else find it slightly ironic that a man named Oral would be so objectionable towards fellatio? Just sayin’.

Sam Harris lambasts liberals for excusing fundamentalists

You’ve got to love Sam Harris. He’s not afraid to speak his mind. On his radar screen these days are the liberal apologists who try and excuse Islamic fundamentalism on economic and social disparity. Is it so hard to believe a religion can entice its followers to hate others for very little cause? I love how he mentions the religious nutbags in America are better suited to understand the danger of Fundamentalist Islam; takes one to know one, I guess.

Interview with a suicide bomber

Can you believe how insane this guy is? Such is life when you live your life by some insane and murderous dogma. This fucker doesn’t even care if his family is killed as a direct result of his actions. This is precisely why I find the concept of the “afterlife” so corrosive; assholes like this suicide bomber make decisions based on the stupid assumption there is life after death.

I also love how the interviewer argues that jihad is only OK if you have permission from the Islamic State. What the fuck is that about? Way to look civilized, moron.

The Good Atheist Podcast: EP 091

This week, we talk about the concept of “Freemium” and why suicide bombers are almost always religious. Don’t miss out!

Why is no one listening to this man?

If there’s one thing you can credit to fundamentalist Islam, it’s their ability to control their flock. There aren’t many Islamic fundamentalists that apostatized, and anytime there is, it offers us a unique opportunity to understand the scope of terrorism that shouldn’t be ignored. Ed Husain was a radical, brought into this culture in college by other British born Muslims, and it wasn’t until he witnessed the cold blooded murder of an innocent man that he was able to walk away. Now, he’s trying to warn other Brits of the growing dangers of fundamentalism, and his message is simple: the UK needs to do a better job at integrating their Muslim population in British society.

He correctly points out one of the main problem lies in Muslim ghettos, where anyone living there can practically spend their entire lives without ever leaving the confines of the group; you can send your kids to a Muslim state school, go to a Muslim NHS doctor, and even do business entirely within the Muslim community there.

Of all the countries in Europe, Britain has had the most trouble properly integrating this minority in their culture (and stories like this don’t help). This in turn is creating a dangerous situation, as their own citizens are slowly becoming their worst enemies. Worst still, British prisons are becoming recruiting centers, a situation that only exacerbates an already serious problem.

I don’t want to sound alarmist here, but when former fundamentalists are telling people they need to act now before it’s too late, is it really a good idea to ignore them? It’s not as though Britain hasn’t been the target of attacks before. The solution seems relatively simple; don’t allow a segment of your population to become dangerously isolated, especially one with a tendency towards fundamentalism. Is that really hard to understand?
